WEISBERG SWEEPS IMSA LITES NEW JERSEY
[June 11th, Millville, NJ] A great weekend on all fronts at New Jersey Motorsports Park, where rounds 5 and 6 of the IMSA Lites series was held (click here for photos). Rain was in the forecast every day of the event, yet luckily the IMSA Lites sessions missed all of the wet weather! New Jersey Motorsports Park is a new track for IMSA Lites and most of the drivers had not been here before. There are two tracks at
this awesome facility - Lightning and Thunderbolt, of which IMSA Lites was run on the latter with the chicane. This was a Formula X weekend with many different classes running as well as a motorcycle event and karting event. If you have not been to this facility you owe it to yourself to check it out!
The turnout was low in L2 this weekend, but the competition was as fierce as it has ever been between the drivers - Garrett Kletjian in his new WX10 and John Weisberg & Eric Vassian in their WR1000 cars. Thursday and Friday's practice days were somewhat low key with most drivers just learning the track. Vassian had a mechanical (which would plague him throughout the weekend) but Weisberg and Kletjian ran without fault for both days running times in the 1:20s.
Saturday's qualifying session proved to be hard fought between Weisberg and Vassian. Everyone was fighting to break into the teens and Vassian was able to do it near the end of the session to win the pole with a 1:19.40. Weisberg was just a tick off of that time with a 1:20.027. Garrett, still learning his new WX10 sportsracer was amazingly close for someone with so little experience in a downforce car, with a 1:21.56. At the start of the race, Vassian was able to keep his P1 start going into turn 1 and then for several laps before Weisberg found a great draft and was able to overtake on the front straight. Vassian tucked in behind and the two cars ran neck to neck for the next 10 laps with barely a car length between them. Unfortunately a transmission issue took Vassian out of the race and Weisberg ran flawlessly to the finish. Garret Kletjian improved his lap times by over 1.5 seconds from the previous days and it was obvious that he was becoming more comfortable with the WX10.
Sunday's qualify was again just as close but with different competitors. Garrett Kletjian either ate an extra bowl of Wheaties in the morning, or spent the night before studying his data because he came out of the gate fast! Turning a 1:18.88, he was almost a second faster than Vassian's previous qualify record of the day before! Coming into the pits he waited to see what Weisberg would do (who was a half second off the pole). With 5 minutes remaining, Weisberg went back out and Garrett followed a minute later. Weisberg feeling the pressure,
knew he had to hit a perfect lap - and he did, turning a 1:18.47 which was a new qualify record. Garrett had a flying going when a red flag came out to stop the qualify.
The race 2 green flag dropped and Weisberg protected his P1 spot. For the first few laps Weisberg was pulling away from Kletjian but shortly after, the WX10 started shortening the distance between the two cars! After a double yellow flag and a restart, Weisberg and Kletjian were neck and neck for the rest of the race. Although Kletjian's pace seem a bit faster, it was not enough to overtake Weisberg, who took the checkered flag just 3/10ths of a second in front of Kletjian. “He made me work for it. About five laps to go I was praying it would end really soon,” Weisberg
said. “I was able to keep him behind me, but it was a lot of work. The Redcom Laboratories West came through for me.” Kletjian and his WX10 however, was able to take the new track record in IMSA Lites L2 with a 1:18.8.
The next stop for the IMSA Lites championship is Lime Rock (July 10th and 11th). So far there are 5 cars registered with a possible 7 or more attending. This will be an ALMS event with over 80,000 fans in attendence. You don't want to miss it!
KLETJIAN TAKES SECOND PLACE AT HIS INAUGURAL NATIONAL DSR RACE
[June 7th, Millville, NJ] Garrett Kletjian today took second place with his new West WX10 in his first ever National SCCA DSR event and amazingly in his first weekend ever in a sportsracer! Even more impressively, his fast lap was only 1.5 seconds off the track record! Kletjian, who is an experienced road racer of Porsche cars as well as a driver in the Trans Am series, had never run a full downforce sportsracer before. Obviously he has acclimated to it very well!
Garrett's next race will be the New Jersey Motorsports IMSA Lites event and from there he plans to campaign the car in SCCA Nationals as well as IMSA Lites.

WEST AUSTRALIA DOMINATES ORAN PARK
[May 31st, Sydney, Australia
] Young gun Aaron Steer has placed himself on the ‘drivers to watch’ list following two sensational victories in the NSW Racing & Sports Car Championship at Sydney’s Oran Park Grand Prix circuit last weekend. The 21 year old rookie driver, aboard the Oasis Systems sponsored WEST WR1000 sportscar, had a challenging qualifying session with a number of incidents that did not allow him many laps of the Oran Park circuit that was totally new to the South Australian competitor. Never the less he was rewarded with the second fastest time (1:16.00) of the 26 car strong grid - only behind the Radical SR3 of Geoff Brunsdon and ahead of the Laucke Flour Mills WEST of Mark Laucke, Peter Opie’s 1500cc Radical SR3, the 1600c.c. Mallock of Alexander Kenny, and the 1300cc Radicals of Bryron Smith, Glyn Edis, Richard Fricker, Chris Medland, and Phil Anseline filling grid spots six to ten.
Race 1 saw Steer jump into the lead on slicks with half the field choosing wets, as light rain had fallen before the start. Steer was ahead of Laucke when the safety car was required for two laps, but again the young South Australian got the jump and led for the remainder of the six lap journey to take the chequered flag, with Fricker’s Radical second followed by the WEST of Mark Laucke in third. Graeme Cook and Greg Keene in their WESTS made up plenty of ground to claim 7th and 8th at the flag respectively, while Sherry’s WEST moved up two spots to finish in 13th.
The Trophy event of t
he weekend was a frantic affair with five WESTs, three Radicals, a Minetti and a Dallara in the top ten grid positions. Glyn Edis (Radical) got a poor start allowing Fricker (Radical) and Laucke (WEST) to battle for first position, while Steer (WEST) had a storming start moving from 9th to 5th by turn 2 behind Graeme Cook (WEST) after Edis (Radical) and Bingham (Minetti) came together. Steer passed Cook and Sam Power’s Dallara Formula 3 car and began the hard chase after the leaders. After a safety car period that closed up the field it was a battle to the end. Laucke (WEST) was challenging Fricker (Radical) for the lead and Steer (WEST) was harassing Laucke until lap 5 when the Laucke Flour Mills sponsored WEST grazed the wall coming onto the main straight. Fricker (Radical) held the lead until lap 7 who was busy with Bingham (Minetti) and at the same time was passing Mooney (Acrobat). It was at this moment that Steer (Oasis Systems WEST) took a brave decision to pounce and threaded his #53 machine between Fricker, Mooney, and Bingham to take the lead. Steer (WEST) maintained his number 1 position to the flag with the pressure easing as Fricker (Radical) ran out of fuel on the last lap and limped to the line in second place. Graeme Cook (Racemoves WEST) finished in 7th just in front of the Laucke Flour Mills WEST of Mark Laucke in 8th with Greg Keene (Sportsmed SA WEST) 12th and Ulrich Sherry in the Navybox School of Motorsport WEST in 15th.
An elated Steer praised his WEST team and the Navybox School of Motorsport for their efforts for the weekend with the #53 WEST chassis that had previously been used by Tom Drewer in Australia before he went to the USA last year to win the 2008 IMSA Lites 2 Championship in another WEST.

WEST WX10 DOMINATES ROAD ATLANTA NATIONAL FROM START TO FINISH
[May 31st, Atlanta, GA] What a great race for West Race Cars and the WX10 this weekend at Road Atlanta! (see photos). The WX10 has proven itself over the past two SCCA events to be as fast as anything in th
e DSR class - or any other class for that matter, beating most all cars on the time sheet and finally getting the DSR National win this weekend. The amount of testing over the past 6 months has been significant and the amount of time spent on the bodywork design, under-aero design, shaker rig testing, and hours of tuning on track have paid off. With over a full year of development and construction, the WX10 is ready to race and win!
The weekend went like clockwork from beginning to end. We started out on the Friday test day just getting the car warmed up, checked out and sorted.
Some adjustments were made to the car with the new Avon tires supplied by Bob Schaefer and Frisby Tire. But everything checked out great and we only ran two of the sessions. Saturday morning we qualified and the West WX10 dominated the DSR class and just about everything else in the field by taking 2nd overall and 1st in DSR, with a 1:20.5. That was almost 2 seconds faster than P2. Additionally, the overall pole was missed by only a half second, being claimed by a Swift Atlantic. Although there was probably another second on the table (I know all racers say that), we came in early and skipped the afternoon session.

8 Glenn Cooper FB VD F1000 1:22.78
9 Paul Schneider FE SCCA Car 1:26.00
10 Jonathan Bennett FE SCCA Car 1:26.125
Sunday morning the race got off to a clean start and Vassian was able to literally pull away from the field, including Keith Grant's Swift Atlantic by a full car length at the end of the front straight. He stayed out front easily for the first 6 laps with only Keith behind him, then unexpectedly started feeling really dizzy. The Atlantic got around Vassian for one lap but the WX10 was able to easily overtake the Swift again on the back straight, and led overall for 4 more laps. The checkered flag came a few laps later, without contention from any other car, including Elan DP02s, Stohr WF1s, and other powerful CSR cars.
The weekend went without a hitch, yet none of it could have been accomplished without Jake Randels and Dan Jang - West's two primary engineers. The guys are top-notch, meticulous, and just know everything about our cars! Secondly, George Dean Racing Engines did a fantastic job with the Suzuki GSXR powerplant, it ran perfect all weekend. And a huge thank you goes out to Bob Schaefer and Frisby Tire, who worked with West to get special sets of tires in for this event.

THE WX10 SHOWS ITS PERFORMANCE POTENTIAL AT VIR
[Apr 7th] [Apr 20th, Danville, VA] It was an incredible weekend for West Race Cars and the WX10 at the VIR SCCA Double National! The car performed amazingly well and was 100 percent reliable throughout the event, although some poorly made decisions by the race stewards and a blunder by the West driver kept things less than perfect. But let’s start from the beginning.
West came to the game with its most “DSR” like car to date. Although the current factory WX10 was built as an IMSA spec car (1100 pound minimum) our engineers (Jake Randels and Dan Jang) spent a lot of time reducing the weight of the vehicle and were able to eliminate 48 pounds. The car also had a Suzuki GSXR 1000 engine, prepared by George Dean Racing Engines, special Avon tires sponsored by Frisby Tire and an updated suspension setup with the help from Ohlins USA. Not as light as the other competitors (over 100 pounds heavier than some), but on par in most other aspects. Eric Vassian was driving the WX10 for the weekend.
On Thursday's test sessions, Vassian spent most of the time re-learning the track, as it had been over 3 years since the last visit. Hankook tires were used, as only one set of the new Avons were available for the weekend and were needed for qualifying/racing. The WX10 ran flawlessly all day, but with 53 cars on the field and over 30 seconds between slowest and fastest, it was almost impossible to get a clean lap!
Friday's agenda was a practice session and then race 1 qualify. Because of all the cars in the group, SCCA decided to split the qualify session into split-starts of 12 each with 15 seconds between groups. The result was evenly positioned cars all ov
er the track with no open space so once again it was near impossible to get a full clean lap in. But one thing for certain, the new Avons were unbelievable, helping to take almost 3 seconds off the morning practice session to get down to a 1:50 flat, yet that was only good for P3 on the DSR grid.
On Saturday, just before the race start the officials decided to once again split-start the event - this time into open-wheel / closed wheel, and they put the closed wheels cars in the back. The problem was there were about 35 to 40 open wheel cars up front with most being slower than any of the DSRs. And the gap between the two groups at the start was less than 20 seconds so in essence most of the fastest front running cars were in traffic almost immediately. A black flag ensued after only two laps and they brought the entire field into the false grid. It seemed that none of the officials knew what to do. They re-started the race in single file and in the words of of one of the officials, “it was a complete mess” (I cleaned up the actual wording!). The end result for West was a third place finish, crossing the finish line 1/10th of a second behind second place finisher Michael Crowe. And impressively, the WX10 was only 6/10ths off the fastest lap in DSR (set by Foyil). Will Haney took first with a 1:51.6 fast lap.
For Saturday afternoon's qualify session, the officials eliminated the split start idea. Jake Randels, chief engineer for West Race Cars was doing an amazing job dialing in the new Avons (we had never run them before) between each session and it was showing up on the track. In the second qualifying session Vassian easily took another second off his times bringing the WX10 down to a 1:48.8 - just 3/10ths off of of Foyil’s pole position of 1:48.5 and second fastest of all DSRs. And in fact, the WX10 had a rolling lap of a 1:47.9, which is faster than the current DSR track record at VIR! Too bad that one wasn't at the start/finish!
Sunday’s race was eventful to say the least. Vassian and Foyil were on row 3 behind two rows of Atlantics. At the green flag, the WX10 pulled ahead of Foyil but could not get around the Atlantics and the cars all went single file up the esses. A double yellow came out on the course, but Vassian (big mistake) did not see it and passed the Atlantic cars (notice in the video Keith Grant did the same thing). After the safety car came out, it motioned Vassian to pull ahead, meaning he had lost his position because of the infraction, so he proceeded to drive around the track to get to the back of the line. However, halfway around the track, an official ran down to the track stopping Vassian and telling him to get back in line - saying that he was the leader!
Not one to argue with an official, he got back into line in first place and the race went green. Mucha, in his CSR got by on turn one, and Vassian followed him for several laps right on his tail, easily faster in all the turns but without the CSR power to pull ahead on the straights.
However, after a few laps, Vassian was black flagged for the double yellow infraction and was forced to stay in the pits for 45 seconds, arguing with officials as to why they didn't just penalize him before the restart.
On the positive side, the WX10 set the fastest lap in the second race over all other DSRs. The car was easily as fast as any of the Stohrs in the group and additionally, it ran reliably and made every session of the 4-day event without a hitch - with much of the credit going to Jake Randels' preparation and expertise at the track. Also, a huge thanks to George Dean for building an incredible motor that ran flawlessly throughout the weekend. We’re disappointed that the results on the podium were not better, but the WX10 has proven to be every bit as good as anything else on the DSR grid, and it’s only getting better with each session. We’re looking forward to the next race!

WEST AND OHLINS FURTHER ENHANCE WX10 PERFORMANCE ON SHAKER RIG
[Apr 7th] West Race Cars spent over 4 days of setup and testing on the suspension of its new WX10 race car. Working closely with Ohlins USA - sponsor for West Race Cars as well as the IMSA Lites series - great strides were made in the handling and performance setup of the WX10. Eric Vassian, Owner of West said "It was pretty amazing to go through this process, as not many teams or manufactures at our level of racing get to do this. We now have a great (and validated) knowledge of the optimal spring rates, damping, compression and other settings for our new car at the various tracks we run".
A massive amount of data was collected while at the Ohlins facility and it will take some time to go through, but there were immediate and clear gains achieved right out of the box. Not only will the shaker rig results make a big difference in setup numbers, but clearly the new shocks that come with the WX10 (Ohlins TTX-36) are a major improvement over the previous model used with the WR1000 (Ohlins ST-44). Because the TTX-36 is a twin tube shock versus the single tube design from the ST-44, compression and rebound are completely separate now, which makes for much more accurate settings. Valving is also completely different. No doubt this will be a significant performance gain for the WX10!

INITIAL OUTINGS FOR THE WX10 STRONG
[Apr 7th] The month of March was spent attempting to put the West WX10 to the test at several racing circuits, and although there were a few snags along the way, initial testing has been
outstanding with much data learned and validated about the new design! In short, the car has shown to have substantially more downforce than the previous West model yet with less drag, better low-speed mechanical grip, and with the same proven reliability as before.
The month of March was extremely busy as we were on track every weekend! That leaves little time for tunaround between races, but Jake Randels and Dan Jang were both up to the task and as usual, did a stellar job getting us through the month. Our first event was the SCCA National at Roebling Road. We were using the Honda CBR1000, and dyno testing showed great promise for the engine. Horsepower and torque were very similar to the Kawasaki ZX10R and the engine build quality was what you would expect from Honda - robust, solid and well designed. The problem is that what happens in the dyno room doesn't always translate to the track. Testing showed that mid-range power was significantly weaker than the Kawasaki and at the end of the front straight we were down 10MPH compared with the same car powered by Kawasaki. But the data also showed entry and exit speeds through all turns on the track being significantly higher than with the WR1000. So even with much less horesepower than before, the WX10 was achieving similar lap times to the WR1000. The time lost at the top end was being made up with the better handling and low-end grip from the new car design.
The next race was an IMSA Lites event at Sebring. Because we had no time to work on the Honda issue, we pulled the motor in favor of the Kawasaki ZX10R - which has always proven to be rock-solid reliable time and time again. However, as luck would have it, we experienced an issue with the new engine just installed and because we only had one spare motor (which had to be saved for customers) we spent the weekend trying to make the engine work - to no avail. Very much a stroke of bad luck as the ZX10R is rock-solid reliable. Making a long story short, we continued to try to resolve the issues with the motor into the next event at Road Atlanta, all the way up to the night before the race when we determined that the motor was not at fault at all, but instead the culprit was a very strangely behaving dry-sump scavenge pump. We replaced the pump and the engine ran perfectly right away. So everything was good to go at this point but because we had no test time on the car, we had not been able to set the air vents for optimal oil and water heating and had performed no aero tuning for Road Atlanta whatsoever. But the engine and car ran flawlessly during the entire race, even with oil and water temps running extremely cold. The positives taken away from the race were that once again, the car showed higher speeds achieved through the lower speed turns (7 and 10) yet even with an engine down significantly on power because of cold oil temps (~155deg), we still achieved better top
end speeds then the WR1000 from the past - once again proving the efficient aero design of the new car with better grip at low-end speeds. And because of this car being IMSA spec (1,018 pounds, Hankook tires, stock motor) we were well over 100 pounds heavier than the two front running cars, yet only a couple of seconds off on lap times. Again showing great potential for the car when we return in May with a DSR specific WX10 dialed in for the event!
Finally for the last weekend in March, the WX10 was rented to a new West customer waiting on his WX10 to be completed. This was a PBOC event at Barber Motorsports Park. The car ran flawlessly the entire weekend and was well received by everyone at the track! With the engine issue resolved, the car ran lap after lap without issue and another advantage is the new bodywork design allows for MUCH better cooling of the radiator and oil cooler - a problem with the WR1000 in hot tempuratures.
So in summary, we unfortunately had a few snags that kept us from dialing in the car for optimal performance in March, but we collected a lot of data and some important questions have already been answered. One - the WX10 is an extremely well handling sportsracer with a very neutral feel. the extra downforce from the new aero design eliminates the "push" issues from the previous car and instills confidence in the driver. Two - the car has substantially more downforce and less drag than the previous West model, validated from the performance data collected. Three - crowds will form wherever you bring the car - people want to see what it's all about! Next stop is the SCCA National race at VIR in mid April. The car should be dialed in and ready to really perform for the first time. We can't wait!

NASA GIVES GREEN LIGHT FOR RUNNING WEST'S ELECTRIC WX10 IN ITS SERIES
[Apr 7th] The National Auto Sport Association (NASA) has just announced that provisions have been made in the 2009 rule book
allowing alternate power race cars to run in their events. NASA was at the PRI show last year and stopped by to learn more about the electric WX10 race car that West had on display. This is great news for West and their charter to be the first race car manufacturer to run full-out electric race cars in official racing series such as NASA. West is also working with IMSA to have an all-electric powered WX10 be part of their series as well. More information on the electric powered WX10 as well as its future racing will be released soon!
WEST NOW OFFERS NEW BUMP SHIFTER FOR WR1000 AND WX10
WEST NOW OFFERS NEW BUMP SHIFTER FOR WR1000 AND WX10
[
Apr 7th] West Race cars is now offering a cable-operated Bump Shifter for the WX10 as well as the WR1000 sportsracers. A no-lift shift option will also be available for the Bump Shifter as soon as testing has been completed. The newly designed shifter will be standard on all new cars ordered and a kit can be purchased for all existing cars. Installation is easy and generally takes about an hour. The Proshift electronic shift system will still be the option of choice for those who want the F1 feel of electronic shifting in the West.
WEST NOW OFFERING ENGINE BAY COOLING VENTS FOR WR1000
WEST NOW OFFERING ENGINE BAY COOLING VENTS FOR WR1000
[Apr 7th] One of the big advantages of the West tunnel floor - as anyone who has driven one knows - is much greater downforce, better handling through high speed turns and faster lap times! But as a result of the tunnel floor being added to the West WR1000 sportsracer, a heating problem has occurred as airflow through the underbody has been restricted by the tunnel floor itself. The result has been (on many of the cars) much hotter bodywork tempuratures and in some cases, delaminating of the top layer of eGlass from the honeycomb.
West has designed a solution for this and now has custom exit vents available for your car. These vents are made from carbon fiber and can be installed easily on your current bodywork (templates are included in the kit). Not only will your car get an updated look, but engine bay and bodywork temps should be much cooler as a result. Pictures of the vents installed will be coming shortly. These vents will be homologated for IMSA Lites cars for the current season. Contact West Race Cars for more information.

[Mar 15th] (Sebring, FL) -- Robby Card came back for an encore performance at rounds 1 and 2 of the IMSA Lites series and new contenders John Weisberg and Mi
chael Hill were added to the lineup as well as Alain Nadal and Eric Vassian. Unfortunately a faulty dry sump pump took Eric and the WX10 out of contention for the event, but the remaining participants were all doing similar times right from the start. Robby Card - the former 2007 L2 Champion - rented a car from West for the event and felt right at home after the first few laps. Michael Hill and John Weisberg had technical issues on the first day, but were able to make enough laps to stay in contention with Robby. Although the start of round one looked to be a close one, by the end it was all Card, who easily won with over a minute lead on second place finisher Michael Hill. When asked about the race, Robby said "We started out pretty close. I had to pass Alain at the start and then we were all pretty close for the first 10 laps or so, until I was able to pull some breathing room".
Round two was the annual IMSA Lites Endurance Race, lasting 75 minutes. Adding pitstops to the formula certainly spices up the race! Robby Card started the race on pole position with Hill, Nadal and Weisberg not far behind. Taking the lead, Robby was starting to put some distance between himself and his competitors before making contact with a DP02 just before turn 1. The West WR1000 only incurred bodywork damage and he was able to stay out but his pitstop was not nearly as clean and efficient as Hill's and Weisberg's from Berg Racing. Both teammates came out ahead and made several position changes for the second half of the race, until coming down to the last turn of the last lap! Weisberg passed Hill before turn 17 and the two cars crossed the finished line only a second apart. Card was about 10 seconds behind for third place. Weisberg, ecstatic over his win said "We got side by side coming out of 16 and we were side by side going down the whole back straight,” Weisberg said. “I got him under braking going into 17 and carried my speed through to the finish line!”. Weisberg’s victory was a hard earned one as he had engine issues throughout the weekend and few laps of practice.

2009 IMSA LITES SCHEDULE RELEASED
DREWER CAPS OFF CHAMPIONSHIP AT LAGUNA
[August 22nd) Rounds 7 and 8 of the Hankook Tires IMSA Lites Championship series is in the record books and what a great race week it was! Most drivers would agree that Mosport is one of the most intimidating, fast and fun tracks ever designed! West Racing brought 3 drivers to the event – points leader Tom Drewer, West Race Cars owner Eric Vassian and new arrival to the West team – Jordan Taylor. Ansa Motorsports brought Alain Nadal and Ray Langston. The weather was great all week – mid 70s and sunny, and the crowd was record breaking…over 100,000 in attendance throughout the event.
Thursday was the promoters test day and two sessions were run for IMSA Lites. Most of the drivers spent the day getting used to the challenging turns on the track. Friday consisted of two test sessions and a qualify. Drewer learned the track quickly and by the end of the day was down to 1:19.4. Vassian was just behind with a 1:20.5 and Jordan Taylor turned a 1:19.2 for what should have been pole position but because of a mis-handling of the qualifying session, the IMSA officials decided to throw out the qualifying times. Thus, Drewer fell into the pole position for race one by default.
The start of race one went smoothly except for Taylor dropping back fairly quickly. As it turned out he lost 5th gear and couldn’t stay up
front, although he was still able to drive consistent 1:20 lap times for most of the race before having to drop out near the end (very impressive!). Vassian, who started 5 positions behind Drewer’s pole position quickly moved up the pack and in short time, was only separated from Drewer by a DP02, which was slower than Vassian, but not slow enough to easily overtake. All the more unfortunate that the qualifying session did not count as the race might have been quite different otherwise. But as it turned out, Vassian finished just 4 seconds behind Drewer and two hundredths of a second off Drewer’s fast lap (and new IMSA Lites L2 record). Needless to say it was a close race!
Sunday threatened rain…but luckily it never came. With Taylor’s car now repaired and fully race ready, the cars lined up for another try at the checkered flag! Drewer, Vassian and Taylor all lined up together in L2 (in that order). At the start, Taylor quickly got around Vassian and pulled up behind Drewer. The two cars stayed in this position, neck to neck for 6 laps and then on lap 7 Taylor made an impressive move passing Drewer on the outside at turn 8. From there he pulled away easily…never looking back. Unfortunately, Drewer had a lower rear A-arm fail a few laps later and had to retire his car. Taylor took the win and also set the new IMSA Lites L2 track record at a blistering 1:18.5! That’s a full 5 seconds off of last years record set by Dan McBreen and 1.5 seconds faster than the record set the day before by Drewer. Congratulations to both Drewer and Taylor for their wins…and a HUGE thank you to the West Race Cars crew of Jake Randels, Kevin Takalo and Dan Jang, who worked tirelessly all week to ensure the cars were maintained properly and performed so well! The crew at West is second to none!

TAKES BOTH THE SPRINT RACE AS WELL AS THE ENDURO
[October 15th] Tom Drewer has finished his first year of racing in North America just the way he started, with another win! The young Australian driver made it ten wins from twelve races after taking Lites L2 Class honours in the 1 hour and 15 minute endurance race at Laguna Seca on Sunday, the finale of the 2008 IMSA Lites Championship presented by Hankook.
Drewer and his Daily Planet WEST set a new qualifying class record of 1:24.182 to gain L2 Class pole and 12th overall around the famous Californian circuit on Friday. He then went on to win the L2 class in the 30 minute sprint race on Saturday, setting a new race lap record on his way to 10th place overall.
The Endurance race threw a lot of unknowns into the mix. We have never raced for that length of time on the Hankook tyres and never before had we been required to complete a pit stop or refuelling. We started the Endurance in 12th overall and I knew the long race distance and mandatory re-fuelling pit stop would reward a consistent pace. There was no point in risking the car early on to gain minimal track position. I set about achieving a good rhythm and pace in the car early on. Jake and my WEST team had near perfect timing on our pit stop– a full course yellow came out about half way through.
It was a shame to end the season under yellow but I think Terry Dale, the Race Director, made a great call. If we’d gone green for a lap I think it would have been on for young and old- probably half the field off at turn 2 and the rest off at the corkscrew.
I’m ecstatic to achieve yet another win here in America and another strong performance for WEST race cars. We surpassed our goal of a top ten overall result, finishing sixth.” “I really have to thank WEST, Eric Vassian, Jake Randels, Kevin Takalo, Dan Jang and Randy Aust for all their effort this year.
Drewer’s results at Laguna Seca means that he has won at every track he’s competed at this year in the 2008 IMSA Lites Championship and now holds five lap records in North America. His Championship win also means he has now taken back-to-back Championships across the Pacific, after dominating the Australian AMRS Thundersports Sportscar Series last year. Drewer is hoping that it is this consistency and speed that will progress him to the next phase of his international career.

FORMER WEST DRIVER CARL SKERLONG WINS ATLANTIC RACE
DOMINATES THE EVENT TAKING POLE AND LEADING GREEN FLAG TO CHECKERED
[September 20th] MILLVILLE, N. J. (Courtesy Herald News): — Carl Skerlong, former West Race Car driver, won his first Atlantic Championship Series race this past weekend. After qualifying to start on the pole earlier in the day — setting the track record in the process — the Mukilteo, Wash., driver led flag-to-flag Sunday to earn his first victory in the Atlantic Championship series in the Mazda Formula X race at the New Jersey Motorsports Park's Thunderbolt Raceway.
“To have my first win here was awesome,” Skerlong said by phone after the race. “We started on the pole and took off from there, opening up a six-second lead. … We went green flag to checkered with no yellows.”
The Atlantic Series race was the first time an open-wheel event had been held at the two and quarter-mile New Jersey Motorsports Park, which opened earlier this year. In qualifying Sunday morning, Skerlong recorded a best lap of 1 minute, 10.211 seconds at 111.624 mph to capture his second career series pole. “I have the inaugural win here, my first win, (US Racetronics’) first win,” Skerlong said. “We hold the track record (for speed) and the series record on the track.”
Next weekend, Skerlong heads to Miller Motorsports Park in Salt Lake City for the second-to-last event in the 11-race Atlantic Series schedule. Before that, he’ll spend a few days in Mukilteo and make a side trip to Bellingham to visit Western Washington University.
Skerlong ran a West WR1000 for over a year and dominated almost everywhere he went. From the way he handled the West, it was obvious that he had a great opportunity in front of him as a leading competitive race car driver. Skerlong has long threatened a win in the Atlantic Championship series and the timing was perfect at New Jersey!

TAYLOR SHINES AT MOSPORT
JORDAN TAYLOR'S DEBUT SMASHES IMSA LITES L2 RECORD
DREWER DOMINATES MILLER
LANDS ON OVERALL PODIUM, NEARLY TAKES IT ALL!
Tooele, Utah May 18th - Tom Drewer took the top step in both rounds at Miller Motorsports Park, easily winning round 4 in class and impressively taking an overall 2nd place win through all classes! Drewer started fifth, but moved up to third place quickly by the end of lap one in his West WR1000. "We just showed what the West tunnel floors can do today," Drewer said. "This track really allows us to use the tunnel to our advantage. It was fantastic to be mixing it up front with all of the L1 drivers."
The WR1000 cars were impressively fast throughout the event, turning basically the same times as the top L1 drivers in the field with their DP02s. During practice, Jordan Taylor , who just joined the L2 championship, turned in the best time of 1:49.01, which was less than 1/10th off of the best DP02 times overall. Qualifying proved to be even faster with Drewer turning a 1:48 flat...about a second off the DP02s. Unfortunately Taylor had mechanical problems that kept him out if the running for the remainder of the event. Drewer, who won rounds 1 and 2 at Sebring, continued his successful ways in the first race (round 3) with a first place finish in L2 and an overall 4th place finish in the 26 car field. Jim
Garrett, who has newly acquired a West WR1000 this year and had little to no time in the car since its purchase, did an outstanding job running the car this week, besting his lap times with every session and taking two 2nd place positions. The car ran perfectly throughout the event, being handled by the West factory race team of Jake Randels, Kevin Takalo, Chas Gorton and Cameron Canaday. Eric Vassian, owner of West Race Cars said "I'm just thrilled with the results this weekend. We've been doing a lot of testing with the car and the new tunnel floor, and it's great to see the results of our efforts here at the race track!. I really need to thank the crew and engineers at West for their efforts before and during the race event. We couldn't do it without them!"
The IMSA Lites series gives drivers the opportunity to showcase their talents in front of the top prototype and GT endurance racing series in the world, the American Lemans Series. Rounds 5 and 6 of the IMSA Lites series will take place at Lime Rock July 11th and 12th. Over 30 cars are expected to show up with 8+ West WR1000s being in the mix.
